If you see a tired-looking bee on the city pavement, what should you do? Inventor Dan Harris, who is based in Norwich, a city in east England, says you can give the hard-working insect a quick bit of help with one of his “bee saviour” cards.
“When we heard about bees getting exhausted so quickly, the fact that we can revive them with sugar solution just struck us as a really great opportunity to connect with nature — especially in a city,” Harris told BBC Radio 1. While the best nutrition for bees is the nectar they find in flowers, a sugar solution can help them make it to their next natural food source, Harris said.
The card provides an emergency ration, one that nature-friendly people can carry around in their pockets. You peel back the label on one of his cards, which are created from old plastic cards, place it on the ground near the bee, and wait for the insect to move on to a sugar-solution cell and feed. Each card has three refillable cells and will be available to buy online and in shops for £4.
